Omaha Hi/Low: Basic Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha hi/lo begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some players often get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game easily enough. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi low offers an exciting collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many players battling for the high, as well as many battling for the low.
