He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His papa introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to discover every little thing he could about poker. He routinely told his parents that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the detrimental comments from others destroy his dream of being one of the best poker competitors in the world.
Phil started competing intently after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a common outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he destroyed many of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to dedication and an immeasurable love for the game of poker. He states that he is picking up skills every day and is incredibly humble about his achievements. Phil admits to making blunders every single session of poker and always aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has won some big-time tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a regular basis.
