Poker Player: Stu Unger

[ English ]

The primary reason why Stu switched from gin rummy to poker was that he was a tiny bit too good at it. So good in fact, that no player possibly could stand up to him. Even the so-called professionals who were supposed to be the most favorable at gin rummy were devoured when they competed with Mr. Ungar. One such gin rummy masters was Harry Stein, called, "Yonkie". Harry was handed such a belittling blow at the hands of stu that he allegedly quit competing in it as a pro and never resurfaced at a gin rummy tournament.

Accordingly, with a honor like that it was not very long before people became afraid of betting against Stu Ungar. He could find no matches and in his bleakness he began doing something no one had done prior. Stu presented beginning handicaps to likely opposing players in the wish that they might compete with him if they believed they held an edge. He at will played from a bad arrangement and one tale has it that he even played against a constant bad egg. Mid match, he get warnings that the cheater was at it yet again but Stu Ungar assured that he was aware of the chicanery and he would still acquire a win, which of course, he did.

The same trend followed Stu Ungar to sin city. He won so often that the poker rooms started asking him not to bet in their poker rooms anymore. The reason was that other poker room customers would not be seated at the table if Stu was playing.

Stu Ungar is recollected better for his accomplishments in hold’em poker but he always said that he was considerably better at gin rummy.

He defeated Doyle Brunson in the WSOP in Nineteen Eighty and became the youngest world camp. Due to his features that made him seem far younger than he was, he got the nickname, "The Kid".
